Service Learning

What is Service Learning?  Service Learning is when you participate is aiding in the community, while learning in the process.  You obtained a hands on experience of learning the importance of helping out in the community.  It’s stepping outside of the box and helping make home and your surroundings a better place.

Make expectations are to get the opportunity to work with Big Brothers and Big Sisters for the first time.  I what to make a difference in at least one child life, so they can later reminder me and something I taught them.  I want to be a part of the rising percentage of volunteers who have changed a life and opened the door that some child felt like wasn’t there.

I would also like this project to teach me, how offering my time can be valuable in someone’s life.  I would like to gain new friendships and partnerships with the organization. My current job requires me to be in the community and offering resources to my student body.  I anticipate on this project drawing me closer to my community.

I will be able to take my communication skills from networking with my service  learning partner, to my future career. It will help make introducing myself to new relationships easier.  I will be able to transfer the experience of working with many different types of people, ages, and cultures.  In the health care field, working across many culture, and generation spectrums, are a part of the daily environment.  Working with my group during this project will also allow me to working more comfortably with different people and teams in the ever-changing health care field.  And this service learning project will surely allow me to experience and develop a special relationship with children, which is more than likely be a larger aspect of my career.


Constructive Criticism

Constructive criticism is polite and/or respectful remarks that has a goal of improving some area of another’s person’s life or work. Often constructive criticism refers specifically to the critique of someone else’s academic or job related work.  In a work environment, a supervisor or boss may conduct employee evaluations to kindly let workers know their areas that need to be improved. Co-workers can also give each other constructive criticism.  When working with different people and in most cases people who are new to the job, you will have situations where something may be done incorrectly or wrong.  In those cases as a member of a team, you would tell the person where he or she went wrong and ways or ideas to improve the situation so it will not occur again.

The main problem you would face when giving or receiving constructive criticism is that not all people are receptive to it. They may either feel their self-esteem shrinking under criticism, or they may feel that all criticism is negative. This can destroy the intent of constructive criticism.

About seven years ago, I had started working my  first job.  I worked there for three years and I became a trainer.  There was a young lady whom I worked very close with for about a month.  When she was no longer working directly beside me, I would come to work some days and notice her doing a lot of things incorretly.  She would prepare things late, she wasn’t attentive to the customers, and she talked on her phone a lot.

Now I had a problem with it, because I was the person who had trained her and I felt that her work in the beginning reflected my ability to train people.  I was also concerned because, whoever was at work at day, was the team for that day and any negative actions affected everyone.  I decided the next day to pull her to the side and tell her what she was doing incorrectly.  I attempted to make it as positive as I could.  I let her know that if she was unsure about any task to feel free to ask, and I explained to here some of the things that didn’t look good to our employeers, like coming into work on the phone.

She thankfully took my constructive criticism with no problem and I was happy for the response I got from her.  It also made me feel good to be able to to do that and have a good outcome.

I had in my mind that next time I trained anyone I would make sure to throw in some side conversations on how to handle situation lie that in the future.


Brittney Warren

I am very dedicated to my work.  I am the Leader of an organization, which allows me to be responsible for myself as well as others.  I believe in giving my all in any situation or project that I’m involved in.  I value my peers opinions and this allows me to work well with others. I have experience in customer service.  I was employed as an Office Assistant for two in a half years, until I was promoted.  I am very organized and I take great pride in all my work.  I have mastered all the basic computer skills along with the Microsoft program.

My education has prepared me in my career by taking classes that teach me to do the actual work that I would be doing in the field.  The health classes have replicas of documentation and paper work that I will be using in the field.  The books are actually books from the HIM field.  I have learned coding, billing, extraction, filing, along with the business aspect of my career.  Taking my diversity class, thought me how to be in a group or team with people of different cultures and ethnicities.  Learning how to respect my peers and potential co-workers who my have cultural backgrounds, are an important part of having a career in the health field.

I have  never had a conflict with a boss or professor.  This is mainly because as a student I know my place in the classroom and what is expected of me.  And as a worker I also know my place and what my job duties require me to do.  Any problems I have as a student or as a worker, I know how to approach them in a professional way with my professor or my boss.  My excellent people skills aided me and making sure that aspect was never an issue in my work and education environment.

I am  a team player, I will do what ever it takes , while still maintaining my professionalism, to make sure my team succeeds.  A teams works together and each voice counts.  And in some cases, a team my need a leader to step up and take charge.  I have no problem standing in when it’s needed.  I also have the know how to be a great team member.  If my team has a leader, I will work just as hard in the followers position and dedicate the same effort to achieve team success.

Who Is Brittney Warren?

My name is Mrs. Brittney Warren. I am a student as well as an employee of Davenport University, Flint Campus.   I first began my education at Davenport in May of 2009.  I also began my employment as Office Assistant that same year.  In June of 2011, I was promoted to Student Life Coordinator for the Flint Campus. Student Life is a program that gives students a fun and expressive way to enjoy college life.  We encourage campus involvement and support student initiatives to foster valuable learning experiences.   I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in the HIM (Health Information Management) program.

Me as a student, I am very hard-working and passionate about my education.  I spent a lot of my time as in online student.  But I quickly learned that I have a greater passion for being in the classroom with my peers.  I enjoy that one on one time with my instructors and I appreciated the support of my peers.

My work is another one of the things I enjoy.  I get the privilege to work in the same place that I receive my education.  As the Student Life Coordinator for the my campus, it is my pleasure to offer students the chance to better their involvement by inviting them to enjoy a successful college experience, which includes social and intellectual development.

Taking Technical Communication, will hopefully widen my networking skills and introduce me to things that I can use in my everyday life, as well as in my employment.  This course is beneficial to my career because, I am studying in the administrative area in the health field.  My job will require me to send emails and memos to insurance companies and other health care facilities on behalf of doctors, staff, and patients. Learning how to convey information in its simplest form for my patients will be essential in my field.
